It is mainly practised in the Mithila region in Bihar and Nepal, where women decorate the floor (aripana) and walls (kohabar) for ceremonies. This geometrical art form fills the entire canvas with vibrant colours made of natural vegetable dyes and mineral oxides.

It employs tools such as fingers, brushes, twigs, nib pens and matchsticks.
