Zama Dube is a South African voice and sound artist currently pursuing a PhD in Cinema and Media Studies at the University of California Los Angeles where she also teaches undergraduate film studies.

She earned her MA in African Literature at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg South Africa.

Drawing from her experiential knowledge as a media practitioner in the South African broadcast industry, Zama’s research interests contribute to a legacy within Black visual cultures that have often been preoccupied with interrogating the politics of representation, notions of the spectacle and the possibility of a Black feminist gaze.

Interweaving audio and visual worlds, Zama’s current research examines practices of visual dissent by Black women and queer cultural producers in the African diaspora.

As a broadcaster, Zama has hosted and produced primetime radio shows for some of South Africa’s leading commercial radio stations such as YFM, 947 and Talk Radio 702.
