Early Life and Career
Jean Simmons was born in Crouch Hill, London, England on January 31, 1929, the youngest of four children to Charles Simmons and Winifred Loveland Simmons.
Her father passed away when she was 16 years old.
At the age of 14, Simmons began her acting career. During World War II, she and her family were evacuated to Winscombe, Somerset. After returning to London, she enrolled in the Aida Foster School of Dance.
Transition to Hollywood
Director Val Guest was impressed by Simmons' talent and offered her a role in his comedy "Give Us the Moon" (1944).
In 1946, she received international acclaim for her portrayal of Estella in David Lean's "Great Expectations." Her role as Ophelia in Laurence Olivier's "Hamlet" (1948) earned her her first Oscar n
